Short-Term Truck Rentals vs. Truck Ownership

Pickup trucks are one of the highest-selling vehicles in America, with trucks making up 18% of all vehicles in sold in the U.S. (that’s 1 in 5 vehicles sold). However, they are also, arguably, the least utilized.

For instance, did you know:

  1. Only 15% of truck owners use their truck for work.

  2. 75% of pickup truck owners use their truck to tow once a year or less.

  3. Nearly 70% of pickup truck owners go off road once a year or less.

  4. 35% of truck owners use their truck for hauling (carrying cargo in the bed) once a year or less.

With high price tags, some people consider whether to buy a pickup truck as opposed to renting one as needed. After all, according to Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for a new full-size pickup truck exceeded $59,000 in December 2022. The cost of a used truck, unfortunately, was not much less expensive, with full-sized used pickup trucks averaging $40,000 in 2021.

Renting a Pickup Truck

There is often a hesitancy about renting a pickup truck for private use. This is because national rental companies like to nickel-and-dime customers to increase profit per rental unit. This means they can be very unforgiving when it comes to dirt, debris, or minor scratches. They also typically have strict rules about where you can—and can’t—drive the truck, which almost invariably means you’ll be deeply fined if you take the truck off road.

Other rental options include renting a truck from a box store like Home Depot. However, these trucks are priced for hourly, local use and typically don’t include towing options.

However, some work truck rental companies, such as Rangefront Wheels, offer pickup truck rentals by the day, week, or month and with significantly fewer limitations than national car rental companies or box stores.

How it Works

Rangefront Wheels specializes in pickup truck rentals with trucks specifically equipped for rugged work. This includes upgraded tires to handle rugged terrain as well as every truck being equipped for towing. Since we don’t have a minimum rental period like most work truck rental companies, this means our trucks are available for rent for private use as weekend toy-haulers or to support your latest DIY project as well as for professional work needs.
